Specialist Dentistry

Certain dental procedures require an additional level of understanding and training. These treatments can only be practiced by dentists who are fully qualified to do so. If we are unable to perform the necessary treatment, we will refer you to a relevant specialist within the area.

Endodontics (Root Canal Treatments)

Root Canal treatments are carried out when the inside of the tooth (the root or pulp) becomes infected or damaged, causing the root to be very painful and creating inflammation with the risk of severe pain and swelling.

Root Canal Treatment eliminates the cause of the pain by completely removing the diseased or damaged tissue from the tooth. The root canal is meticulously cleaned, shaped and decontaminated, before securely filling it back up with a durable, inert material. This means you can be pain free whilst keeping your original tooth.

There have been great innovations in the last few years to improve the comfort, speed and efficiency of this treatment.

Periodontics (Gum Treatments)

Gum disease affects the gums, bone and ligaments that support your teeth. These structures are the foundations that enable you to keep your teeth for life, but they can be damaged by bacterial infection.

If left untreated, gum disease can progress into a more serious condition, called periodontitis. In cases of periodontitis, the deeper structures of the tooth supporting apparatus, including the jawbone and the connecting ligaments, will be destroyed. Without treatment the supporting structures will have receded to such an extent that the teeth may be lost.

The main cause of this destructive process is bacteria, which form around the neck of the teeth in a sticky mass, called plaque or biofilm. Biofilm is an organized matrix for the bacteria to live in and multiply. Although bacteria are the main cause of periodontitis, gum disease is a multi-factorial disease. Other factors include smoking , genetics, hormonal changes (pregnancy), stress, certain medications and medical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

Treatment of periodontal disease starts with an experienced dentist examining the gum tissue and diagnosing the correct type and stage of the underlying gum disease. The aim of periodontal treatment is to stop disease progression and keep the natural teeth. More severe cases need specialist treatment with a periodontist.
